For information buying a phone, please see Working and studying in Japan. Japan has had a tendency to develop technology that’s initially superior to what’s available elsewhere in the world, but either fails to catch on elsewhere or becomes incompatible with global standards. This has been called Galápagos syndrome, after the Galápagos Islands and their highly-specialized flora and fauna that led Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution. Japan is one of the few countries in Asia where coin laundries are common. Otohime is a goddess from Japanese mythology, but here the name is a pun, written with kanji to mean “Sound Princess”.

National Anthem

Indeed, it is generally fair to say that an English word derived from Latin/French roots typically corresponds to a Sino-Japanese word in Japanese, whereas an Anglo-Saxon word would best be translated by a Yamato equivalent. Absence of wa often means the subject is the focus of the sentence. This is partly because these words evolved from regular nouns, such as kimi “you” (君 “lord”), anata “you” (あなた “that side, yonder”), and boku “I” (僕 “servant”). The nasal is sensitive to its phonetic environment and assimilates to the following phoneme, with pronunciations including ɴ, m, n, ɲ, ŋ, ɰ̃.

Modern Japanese has become prevalent nationwide (including the Ryūkyū islands) due to education, mass media, and an increase in mobility within Japan, as well as economic integration.

It’s important to note that this guide is going to teach you how to read hiragana and not how to write it.

Most will teach you the same content one way or another, so pick one that you feel fits your learning style.

There are no official restrictions on the kanji used in publications and literature.

Japan: geography and landscape

Elongated vowels are usually denoted with a line over the vowel (a macron) in rōmaji, a repeated vowel character in hiragana, or a chōonpu succeeding the vowel in katakana. /u/ (listenⓘ) is compressed rather than protruded, or simply unrounded. Based on the Man’yōgana system, Old Japanese can be reconstructed as having 88 distinct morae. Man’yōgana also has a symbol for /je/, which merges with /e/ before the end of the period.

Seafood features heavily in Japanese cuisine, including creatures of the sea and many varieties of seaweed. A complete meal is always rounded out by some pickles (漬物 tsukemono). Japan’s main contribution to jewelry is the cultured pearl, developed by Mikimoto Kōkichi. The pearls are widely available, although there is little if any price difference to buying them outside Japan. For those who insist on getting their hands on the “authentic” stuff, Mikimoto’s flagship store is in the Ginza district of Tokyo, while the small town of Toba still hosts Mikimoto’s Pearl Island.

It was created during post-World War II food shortages to help people fill up on available and affordable cuts of meat. Once born of necessity, eating motsu is now mainstream, with restaurants that specialize in offal appearing in Tokyo around the year 2000. Japan’s Ministry of Defense has been forthright in acknowledging that the demographic crisis will affect national security. It outlined, in its new security strategy in 2022, how the rapid population decline would require a more efficient use of its budget and labor force. The Japanese military has tried to adapt its operations to a smaller force, including by retrofitting vehicles and ships to operate with fewer people and relying on advanced technology to carry out tasks traditionally assigned to people. In December 2024, the Ishiba government approved funding within its 2025 fiscal budget to increase wages and implement new measures to improve work-life balance in the armed forces.

Federal Donuts & Chicken has two suburban shops on the way, plus Philadelphia International Airport. The Afro-centric Honeysuckle from chefs Omar Tate and Cybille St.Aude-Tate is opening soon on North Broad Street. Out-of-town groups such as Ayat (Palestinian), Medium Rare (steak frites), Ruth’s Chris (steak), Little Gay Pub, and the F1 Arcade are on their way. The Japanese menu has multiple tiers, but the $55 silver package is the best bang for your buck. The starters like wagyu tartare and bone marrow are all well and good, but it’s the bubbly broth you’re here for.

Low-cost carriers have become popular with cheap domestic and international flights, and Narita is now a hub for low cost carriers, including Jetstar Japan, Skymark, and Peach. Public facilities like trains almost universally include English signage, and the Shinkansen and other commonly-used trains also announce upcoming stops in English. Tourist attractions and large businesses also usually have at least some English signage, but as you get farther off the beaten path, English becomes more spotty (and the translations more questionable).

Head to a department store food floor—like the basement of Mitsukoshi in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi district—where sushi isn’t just a nigiri of rice topped with Missav – Pussy seafood.
